Fertel to discuss new book tonight

Rien Fertel, author of a new book titled Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera, will discuss it at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie. This event is free and open to the public. There is no registration.

The book is an exploration that involves the founding of the Muscle Shoals music scene, the economic building of the south by the Tennessee Valley Authority, opioid cough syrup, air conditioning, Jimmy Carter and the Allman Brothers, the Dukes of Hazard, Neoconfederates, 9/11, Werner von Braun, and Lynyrd Skynyrd and the gym teacher crewcut authoritarian from whom they got the name.

Rien Fertel is the author of The One True Barbecue (2016), and Imaging the Creole City, The Rise of Literary Culture in 19th Century New Orleans (2014). Rien Fertel is a Louisiana-born and based writer, historian, and teacher. He grew up in his family’s chain of restaurants across the country, and, after graduating from college, ran a grocery-deli in downtown New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina exiled him to New York, where he started writing about food. His work has appeared in Oxford American, Garden and Gun, Southern Living, Spirit, Saveur, The Local Palate, and many other publications. He holds a Ph.D. in History, teaches in New Orleans, and divides his time between the banks of the Mississippi River and a 100-plus-year-old church in St. Martinville, Louisiana.
