Looking for a way to keep young ones busy on your vacation travels? “Doodle Journeys: A Fill-In Journal for Everyday Explorers” by Dawn DeVries Sokol is an interactive travel book that encourages readers to doodle about their experiences. Illustrated by Caldecott Honor Writer Bryan Collier, the book follows young Shorty who plays trombone in a band every day at 5 o’clock, after his chores and homework are done. The band enjoys parading through their Treme neighborhood and other places in New Orleans but one day Shorty misses band rehearsal and hits the street looking for his bandmates. Feeling low, he meets people and sounds that offer inspiration for being a musician, friend and eventually, a bandleader.
“Ghost Boys” (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers), a heartbreaking and powerful story about a black boy killed by a police officer, is penned by Jewell Parker Rhodes, an award-winning author of several young adult books, including the Louisiana Girls Trilogy of “Ninth Ward,” "Sugar" and "Bayou Magic." The book was an instant New York Times and IndieBound bestseller and the No. 1 Indie Next Pick. The Louisiana Girls books have received the Parents’ Choice Foundation Award, the Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award, and the Jane Addam’s Children’s Book Award, among others. On sale June 12 is “Buddy: Based on the True Story of Gertrude Lintz” (Part of The World of William Joyce) by William Joyce of Shreveport. Aimed at ages 5-9, the book revolves around the gorilla who was raised by Gertrude Lintzwas like a human.
