Tubby and Coo’s MidCity Bookstore is now accepting applications for its new summer intensive writing workshop. The 10-week workshop focuses on the intersection of social justice and writing science fiction and fantasy.

Author Rhonda Lawson's Kickstarter campaign to create writing-reading hub in New Orleans

Author Rhonda Lawson of New Orleans envisions an independent bookstore that offers literary events, writing classes, monthly jazz and poetry nights and live music. She wants to give students and community members a place to read, do homework and enjoy a glass of wine, smoothie or African coffee or tea. “Authors can work on their next releases, and poets can pen their spoken word,” she said. “Community members can peacefully read a book or newspaper while enjoying jazz music.” But that’s not all. The Finer Words Literary Cafe will elicit donations that in turn will go to local literary programs and scholarships to graduating seniors and summer writing programs. Lawson is in negotiations with a major coffee company and she has started a Kickstarter campaign to make Finer Words Literary Café a reality — funds raised in the Kickstarter campaign will go toward startup costs, securing a location, furnishing, inventory and staffing.
