Tuesday Ebook Spotlight: 'The Last Suppers'

MARCH 12, 2018 UPDATE: "The Last Suppers" is now on sale for $2.99 at online bookstores.

Mandy Mikulencak, author of award-winning young-adult and adult fiction, sets her latest novel in 1950s Louisiana.

Here’s the book description:

“The Last Suppers” evokes both “The Help” and “Dead Man Walking” with the story of an unforgettable woman whose quest to provide meals for death row prisoners leads her into the secrets of her own past.

Many children have grown up in the shadow of Louisiana’s Greenmount State Penitentiary. Most of them—sons and daughters of corrections officers and staff—left the place as soon as they could. Yet Ginny Polk chose to come back to work as a prison cook. She knows the harsh reality of life within those walls—the cries of men being beaten, the lines of shuffling inmates chained together. Yet she has never seen them as monsters, not even the ones sentenced to execution. That’s why, among her duties, Ginny has taken on a special responsibility: preparing their last meals.

Pot roast or red beans and rice, coconut cake with seven-minute frosting or pork neck stew . . . whatever the men ask for Ginny prepares, even meeting with their heartbroken relatives to get each recipe just right. It’s her way of honoring their humanity, showing some compassion in their final hours. The prison board frowns upon the ritual, as does Roscoe Simms, Greenmount’s Warden. Her daddy’s best friend before he was murdered, Roscoe has always watched out for Ginny, and their friendship has evolved into something deep and unexpected. But when Ginny stumbles upon information about the man executed for killing her father, it leads to a series of dark and painful revelations.

Truth, justice, mercy—none of these are as simple as Ginny once believed. And the most shocking crimes may not be the ones committed out of anger or greed, but the sacrifices we make for love.

New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs says this of the novel: “A gorgeous novel that finds beauty in the most unlikely of places.”

The woman he meets at a high-profile family celebration won't change his playboy ways. Still, Rafe is intrigued by the stunning Secret Service agent who never mixes business and pleasure. He has no choice but to jet to DC and use his legendary Lawson power of seduction to win over Avery Richards.

The first female in her family to rise up the ranks of high-level government security, Avery is comfortable flying halfway across the world at a moment's notice. But her desire for the sax-playing heir to a political dynasty creates more tension than being on presidential detail. Their fathers are enemies who share a long, bitter history. When Avery falls for Rafe, her loyalty to her family is tested and Rafe's contentious feud with his father could cost them everything. They must now decide what's most important—the life they've always lived or the one they can possibly make together.

Tuesday Ebook Spotlight: Hailey North

I’m proud to say I’ve known Hailey North for many years now. We met at the New Orleans chapter of Romance Writers of America when I signed up for a writer’s critique group and she volunteered as a published author to lead it. We were fortunate to have a Garden District writer among us, which meant meeting at a gorgeous, historic home. And, because it’s New Orleans, naturally wine was involved.

My novel writing skills were shaped in those meetings and I thank Hailey every time I see her. I’m thrilled to see her books available for ebook downloads and today I’m spotlighting “Opposites Attract,” the fifth book in the “Love, New Orleans Style” series, along with “The Right Kind of Crazy,” book six. If you love well-penned, fun romantic stories set in colorful New Orleans, you must check out Hailey North.

Here are the descriptions:

“Opposites Attract”
Hollywood bad boy Cameron Scott wants to be anywhere other than New Orleans, stuck for hours in old man makeup and forced to walk with a cane. He’s made millions as an action hero, but his manager has tricked him into portraying the children’s character “Mister Benjamin,” assuring him the film will be good for his career.

For Cameron, the best thing that’s happened to him is meeting Jonni DeVries, the enchanting lady of the house where the crew is filming. He’s not planning to settle down, though, and the widowed mother of an impish five-year-old certainly isn’t looking for a one-night stand.

What will she do when she discovers the kindly old man she thinks she’s been confiding in is one of Hollywood’s most notorious playboys? Can the real Cameron help Jonni find the courage to love again?

“The Right Kind of Crazy”
Marriage-minded Dr. Sami Pepper accurately diagnoses Flynn Lawrence as a man who lives to play the field. She bets him he can't go seven days without trying to seduce a woman. What she doesn't count on is that she might discover Flynn is the only man she wants to marry.

Thrown together by well-meaning friends on a road trip from New Orleans to Nashville, Flynn confirms he and Sami have completely opposite goals. He's all about Good Times. She seeks True Love. Crazy thing is, he can't get her out of his mind. His solution? To help her find her Mr. Perfect.

Falling in love with someone who's all wrong for you is crazy. But not if it's... “The Right Kind of Crazy.”

Tuesday Ebook Spotlight: St. Amant's 'Dream'

Jolie St. Amant offers a 99-cent paranormal novella set in New Orleans in the one of the Quarter’s most talked about bordellos in “Dream a Little Dream of Me.”

Drinks disappear from the bar, a woman appears in the corner of your vision and is gone, and there's a cat that may or may not be a figment of your imagination.

And then, there's the vampires...

St. Amant fell in love with all things New Orleans after reading “Interview with the Vampire” by Anne Rice. Now, a frequent visitor to the Crescent City, she can often be found getting inspiration from ghost tours, or sipping cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde. “Dream a Little Dream of Me” is the first in the Chateau Rouge Series.

Tuesday Ebook Spotlight: Thompson's 'The Off Season'

I've known Colleen Thompson of Houston since we were both first published in 1999. She's written a host of wonderful books, including under the pen name of Gwyneth Atlee. Her novel, "The Off Season," is only 99 cents the month of July.
Here's the book description for "The Off Season"
Winter winds off the Atlantic have turned the tourist mecca of Seaside Creek, New Jersey, into a ghost town. Dr. Christina Paxton, however, is growing accustomed to living with ghosts. Recently widowed, the emergency room physician has returned to the shore with her young daughter, house-sitting a sprawling beachside Victorian home. One night, her two-year-old calls her by a name that makes Christina’s blood run cold and sends her thoughts spiraling back thirty years.
Deeply unnerved, and certain someone else is in the house, she flees with her child into the cold night, only to come face-to-face with Chief Harris Bowers, a former classmate with whom Christina has a complicated history. Now divorced, Harris hopes to mend their past, but Christina is wary of being played for a fool again. As threats emerge, Christina and her small family find themselves in grave danger. It seems there is no one she can put her trust in—least of all herself.
