Two new children’s books introduce kids to the wonders of the Louisiana swamp.
An alligator yearns to be the queen of the swamp, following in her mother's royal footsteps, in Brenda
Farrington’s “Swamp Diva,” and she believes that task requires jewels, makeup and
looking cool. Her family and friends
teach her that beauty comes from within and through acceptance and understanding.
“I never rule with sparkling jewels, crowns, or fancy stuff,”
Momma tells her. “Respect and rules and love for all have always been enough.”
Harrington, a lifelong resident of Farmerville, wants to encourage readers through her book to “read, create, explore, show kindness to others and to appreciate all animals,
even the ones with long, sharp teeth.”
"Swamp Diva" is illustrated by Penny Weber and published by Mascot Books.
“B Pour Bayou: Un Abécaédaire Cadien" by UL Press is a charming illustrated Cajun French alphabet book written by Richard Guidry and illustrated by Réjean Roy with occasional help from a host of Cajun writers. For instance, “C comme chaoui, cipre et cocodrie” (C for raccoon, cypress and alligator) is followed by an essay titled “Pour Peindre un cocodrie,” or to paint an alligator by Brenda Mournier. There’s even a gumbo recipe.
It’s the perfect book for young French students, especially those in Louisiana French immersion studies.
A few other books that take young readers to wetlands:
Leif Pedersen's "The Adventures of the Swamp Kids"
Erin Rovin's "Little Laveau"
Johnette Downing's "Ten Gators in the Bed" and "Fifolet"
Alexis Braud's "Gumbo — "A Magical Bayou Tale"
Yvette Landry's "The Ghost Tree"
Louisiana Book News is written by award-winning author Chere Dastugue Coen, who writes Louisiana romances and mysteries under the pen name of Cherie Claire. Her first book in each series is FREE to download as an ebook, including "Emilie," book one of The Cajun Series, "Ticket to Paradise," book one of The Cajun Embassy series and "A Ghost of a Chance," the first Viola Valentine mystery.
